Have your say on the new act

Scottish funeral directors will soon operate under a new regulatory framework, which will be the first of its kind in the UK.

This follows the passing into law of the Burial and Cremation (Scotland) Act 2016. It will mean the introduction of a statutory inspector of funeral directors, regulations governing the funeral profession and the possible licensing of funeral directors.

It is a major step for the industry and could have ramifications across the UK if the rest of the country eventually followed the Scottish example.

The regulations stemming from the Act will influence the services received by bereaved people and how the funeral profession conducts business for years to come. Therefore, it’s vital that funeral directors share their insights and expertise and contribute to the creation of the new system.

As part of the sector’s work to help the Scottish Government develop an effective and successful regulatory regime, SAIF and the NAFD are jointly staging a oneday debate in the heart of Scotland for members and non-members.

This will give you the opportunity to find out more about the powers granted by the Burial and Cremation (Scotland) Act and make sure your voice is heard at government level.

Among the speakers will be Cheryl Paris, Policy Manager at the Scottish Government, as well as SAIF and NAFD representatives.

The event will take place between 10am and 3pm on Saturday, 1 April 2017, at Stirling Court Hotel and will include a buffet lunch. While open to members of the NAFD and SAIF, as well as non-members, attendance is by advance registration only so booking is required.

Tickets are free for NAFD and SAIF members, or £40 for non-trade association members. Book your entry here For further information, contact the SAIF Business Centre.
